Finding the Light Within

June brings a powerful convergence. It is National PTSD Awareness Month - a time to honor the invisible battles fought by our veterans and security alumni. But June also brings us the International Day of Yoga, perfectly synchronized with the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year.

This alignment is no coincidence. It is an invitation to explore how the ancient tools of yoga help us find inner stability and light, even when our internal nervous system feels trapped in its darkest moments.

The Wisdom of 108

On International Yoga Day, practitioners traditionally complete 108 Sun Salutations. Beyond the physical challenge, this sacred number carries deep medicine for trauma recovery:

1 represents the Individual: Your unique story, your pain, and your personal journey.

0 represents Emptiness: Dropping the heavy armor, letting go of the ego, and clearing the mental noise.

8 represents Infinity: The vast, interconnected universe.

The geometry of 108 reminds us that the individual, the emptiness, and the infinite are one. When we breathe and move together, isolation melts into connection. We are all part of the same whole.

Quick Tools for Inner Stability

You don’t need to do 108 intense movements to find balance today. Try these simple practices:

Root Down: Sit firmly and feel your feet flat on the floor. Remind yourself: “Right here, right now, I am supported by the earth.”

Lengthen Your Exhale: Inhale for a count of 4, and exhale slowly for a count of 6. This simple shift activates your body’s relaxation response.

Capture the Light: Step outside for 5 minutes of morning sunlight. Let the warmth soothe your nervous system and anchor you in the present.
